If, like me, you are a useless bloke or if you are simply a member of the fairer sex that would like to make sure that you get the most for your money. I hate going to the smelly counter at the local department store. Before I started the extensive research for this article I knew very little about perfume and a trip to the department store was agonising. I wanted to get my loved one some perfume that she'd really love but found that I really knew nothing.

The nice girl behind the counter could have sold me cold tea and I would have been none the wiser. I had as the result of a few failed efforts to pick well become fearful of buying perfume so I therefore resolved to develop a way of making a successful purchase without actually knowing anything about perfume. So here it is the complete idiots guide to buying perfume.

Choose by name and make

The name of a perfume will say a lot about what type of perfume it is and who it is aimed to be worn by. The name of the brand in perfume is similar to those in designer clothing. It is a good idea if possible to choose a brand that you know your loved one likes. The larger the brand name the less likely they are to produce a terrible perfume. That being said it does occasionally happen! Some of the more reliable big names in the industry are Channel, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior. There are so many changes in the perfume industry that makes it impossible to choose a single favourite but Rose 31 perfume by Le Labo and lily and spice by Penhaligon are pretty good bets.

Choose by Price

This does not mean that you should buy the cheapest! Quite the opposite in fact. If you can throw money at the problem the chances of getting a completely rubbish scent is less likely. Cheap perfumes must be avoided at all costs. Your girlfriend will soon sniff out a bad one and you will probably wish you hadn't got her anything at all. On the flip side spending mega bucks would not be a wise idea as you could be buying something that is really expensive that she may not like after all. For that reason you should probably look at a mid range bottle. This should mean that you should be paying around 35 pounds for 30mls. If you can afford this then you are likely to be successful in your search.

Choose by celebrity

There are thousands of celebrity endorsed perfume that are available. One way to make your choice would be to pick the perfume that is endorsed by a celebrity that your loved one likes. I would advise against perfumes that have been endorsed by Katie Price if your loved one does not like her. Christina Aguilera represents tricky ground as there seems to be an equal amount of people that either love or hate her. I would recommend someone like Kate Moss because she seems to have universal appeal to both men and women across the globe.
