Where people make big mistakes is in buying items on impulse without taking the time to research the items prior to the purchase.

Thrift stores as well as consignment shops can be great places to not only get great bargains, but you may be able to pick up some designer pieces that are at a fraction of the price they originally sold for and are still in like new condition.
