For ages, people have always looked to coloring their hair as the fastest and most dramatic way to change a look. Everyone gets bored sometimes with their appearance, so changing your hair color has become the most common way to change directions with your look. The first, most basic thing to be aware of when thinking about this is that there are two different types of hair dyes: permanent and semi permanent. There are many variations of both these types, but knowing the differences between them is definitely the most important thing.

The most fundamental thing about permanent and semi permanent hair dyes is how long you want the color to stay in your hair and how much of a change you want. If you want to create a subtle change or just deepen your natural hair color, then semi permanent is probably what you want. Semi permanent washes out in about 6 12 shampoos, but still depends on what type of formula you use. When you buy hair dye, the packaging will usually tell you approximately how long the color will hold in your hair. If you are looking for a more dramatic, longer lasting change, then most likely you want to think about using a permanent formula. There is also something called demi permanent, which is very similar to a semi permanent formula, but it lasts a few weeks longer.

Some helpful hints that you may not be aware of when using permanent tints is that the formula must be mixed hydrogen peroxide in order to successfully lift the color. People tend to get scared when they hear the word peroxide being associated with hair color, but it actually plays a very interesting role in the process. The peroxide opens the cuticle in the hair which allows the formula to penetrate the cortex and ultimately form the color.

Semi permanent colors do not ever really lift any color from your hair, but rather they vary the tone. This can be seen through highlighting of your natural color or even some darkening. This is a great type of dye to go with if you do not want something drastic right away and it also does not cause any problems when trying to regrow your natural hair. You should also look into semi permanent vegetable colors which contain only vegetable extracts and natural ingredients so it does not strip any of the color from your hair.

No matter what hair color you decide to go with, just make sure you take the time to learn more about what type of dye you should use and what will work best for you.
