Being Ready When There Is An Earthquake

Earthquake preparedness is the best way to stay safe in any event. There is a very high chance (more than 67%) that Los Angeles will be hit with a major earthquake sometime in the next thirty years. This means that officials throughout the city and county are looking to residents to become more aware of what they need to do in order to be prepared for the next earthquake. This means that every home should have one or more earthquake kits put together.
Along with the kit, a family must have a disaster plan put in place. This is the way that you will all communicate when it comes to a natural disaster. If one or more family members are not home at the time, there should be a designated meeting place if everyone can get there safely. And then there is the emergency kit. What should go in it?
There are a lot of items that can be useful in a natural disaster, but the top ten essential items that an earthquake survival kit must have are: water, food, cash/important documents, clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, medicine, radio, toiletries, and tools. Food and water are the most important because you want to have something with you in case it can take awhile before you get access to other sources of food or water. You will also need cash because if you still have to end up buying something at a store after the earthquake, many electronic systems, including those that work for credit cards, will probably be down.
Flashlights, first aid kits, and any specific medication for anyone in the family is an essential part of this kit as well because someone could need injury care. If you have only a slight injury, it is best to take care of it yourself and follow up with a doctor to free up emergency resources for those who could be worse off.
Having a radio is vital to be able to hear what is going on and if there are any instructions from officials as to where to go. Make sure the radio can work without electricity. If it runs on batteries, you will want to make sure to have fresh batteries at all times in the kit as well.
An emergency survival kit can work for earthquakes, floods, and other disasters. But thinking about it will not do anything for your or your family. If disaster strikes today, will you be ready?
