This is because people can be more effective in their workouts. If you are going to spend an hour at they gym then why not get 100 percent out of your workout instead of 60 percent. No longer is the weight scale the only way to measure effectiveness of your workouts. Having a heart monitor is not a substitute for having a personal trainer but it's a lot cheaper and can give you amazing results.
One of the downfalls of these watches is that the battery life can be limited. Polar heart monitor watches have to be sent in to get their battery replaced by an authorized dealer. This is defiantly a pain but at least battery replacement only needs to be done once a year.
