The physiological effect of stress on the body is that it alters the hormonal environment as well as hormonal levels. For a disease like diabetes this spells great trouble. In order to control diabetes it is important to exercise control over the hormones particularly insulin and stress can create an imbalance here.
When the body is stressed, stress hormones are released to burn up more stored energy from the body. However, sometimes in diabetes patients these stress hormones i.e. adrenalin and glucocorticoid are unable to reach these energy stores. This may be due to improper response to stress that often diabetes patients show.Due to this the released glucose is not accessed and broken down but left free to move in the blood stream. This increases the blood sugar levels, which makes diabetes management a big problem.
The negative impact of stress on diabetes is also emphasized by the lifestyle changes that it brings about. So, along with increasing blood sugar levels stress is instrumental in inducing undesirable dietary and lifestyle changes.
It is a fact that when stressed people turn to comfort food.A person with diabetes and stress may throw all caution to the winds and indulge in junk foods or other high calories foods to soothe themselves, which means big trouble for them. Diabetes control calls for strict dietary regulations and schedules to be maintained and stress can throw this out of gear.
Another negative association between diabetes and stress is in respect to exercise.A diabetes patient under stress may not feel like exercising, which is so very essential for the disease control. The blood sugar levels will further shoot up, aggravating the condition. With such drastic and undesirable lifestyle and dietary changes owing to stress, diabetes control becomes a big ask.
Stress also disrupts the sleep pattern of a person, which is a potential source of problem for a diabetes patient.
In order to get a hold on diabetes it is also important to get a hold on stress.Firstly, religiously stick to an exercise schedule because exercise is a known stress buster. This will be beneficial for both diabetes and stress.Relaxation techniques and deep breathing are very useful tools to combat stress so, you can consider employing meditation and yoga to alleviate your problem.
It is said that laughter is the best medicine and indeed it is.So, hang around with close friends, watch a comedy show or read a joke book and laugh to your hearts content to see your stress disappear.
A positive attitude in life always helps, so make it a part of your personality. To cope better with diabetes and stress, paying heed to the above mentioned points will help.So control diabetes and stress and lead a healthy life.
