Many that need to lose weight have a lot to lose. It is not just a case of people needing to lose 10 or even 20 pounds. Often people need to lose 50, 70 or even 100 pounds. Losing this type of weight can often take a year or even a longer time. It is critical that these dieters stay motivated as they face their weight loss challenge.

While television shows us dieters that lose weight in a short period of time on a reality show for cash prizes, short-lived fame and lots of applause the typical person leads a much different live. The average overweight or obese person needs to stick to a reduced calorie diet and exercise program for quite some time. Sometimes their metabolism is unused to losing weight, so it takes a little time for the "fire" of their metabolism to get started on actually losing weight.

The long-term dieter needs both patience and determination. Patience to stick with their diet even when it doesn't seem to be working as they wish it would. Determination to stick with their diet even when they are tempted to have the chili cheese fries instead of the fruit platter. We live in a fast food society with so many food treats and things to entertain our mouths. It is so easy to literally eat your way through thousands of calories without even realizing it.

One popular ice cream parlor last year came out with an ice cream shake that was discovered to have more than two thousand calories for a medium serving. That is just about all of the calories the average person should have in an entire day! With temptation like that, it is easy to see how these dieters need this special combination of both patience and determination each and every step of their way.

This dieter is like the marathon runner, whereas the typical dieter is more like the sprinter. A long-term dieter has a longer ways to go and needs to accept that they will be "on the road" for a longer time. This is an opportunity to embrace health and to change habits. For most of us, changing habits takes time. The person who is quite overweight or obese most likely has more habits to change.

Someone with a lot to lose should consider looking for support as they embark on their weight loss goals. A personal trainer can help them create a physical fitness program. A nutritionist can help them create a nutritional food plan customized for them. A hypnotist can create self-hypnosis tapes to help take away unwanted food cravings and help to develop a positive self-body image.

A therapist can also assist someone who is quite overweight work through their emotional issues that may have put them in the position they are in. Many people that overeat, eat because they are not facing their problems. They are not expressing their emotions. Expressing their emotions with a therapist can be an excellent outlet.

People everyday decide to go on diets. People lose thousands of pounds. You have the choice to lose the weight you no longer want to carry on your body.
