The baby boomer generation spent a lot of time moving forward at what seemed to be the speed of light, and retirement, with what seems to be a cessation of activity, is usually quite unattractive.
The truth is, baby boomers are entering retirement with the same amount of energy that they did everything else, and the retirement hobbies that they are taking up are extremely wide and varied. There's no need to get quiet and start sipping your tea, because the retirement hobbies for baby boomers are proving very active and a lot of fun!
Travel
Without a doubt, this tops the list of the retirement hobbies that baby boomers take an interest in. Many baby boomers find that they have always wanted to see France, or Belize of Tokyo, and with no job in the way and the kids out of the house, they do just that. While some of them go on tours, others head off as a couple or solo, and they're finding out that adventure can be found at any age.
Horticulture
While you might be cringing at the idea of being that retiree who putters around the house and waters their ferns, the fact is, many baby boomers find that growing things is a great retirement hobby. You can experiment with turning your home into a hothouse jungle, or you can get more adventurous than that and work with cross-pollination methods to create entirely new plants.
Water-skiing
Or tennis, or hiking or anything else that will get you active. The baby boomer generation has been an active generation in more ways than one, and many of them have no intention of letting their bodies go to pot when they no longer have to get up to go to the office. Think about what you have always wanted to try and to learn and make sure that you are in a good place to do so; retirement hobbies are an excellent excuse to get fit. Whether you want to fence, snowshoe or dance, there has never been a better time.
Rescue
The urge to protect and rescue is very strong, and sometimes, it feels a little under exercised when your kids have left. Many baby boomers find that the empty nest is a great place to bring strays of all sorts, and many baby boomers make a retirement hobby out of rescuing animals of one sort or another. Whether you are just trying to feed stray cats or you want to go all the way and get your wildlife rehabilitation certification, this is a great way to use your time.
Your retirement will be as exactly active as you make it, so take some time and make sure that it takes the shape you want! There is an entire world of opportunity out there waiting for you, and choosing the right retirement hobbies is one of the best ways to explore it.
