Have you ever started running the water for a bath or got the shower going and climbed in it only to discover that you have no hot water? Probably almost anyone who has owned or rented a home or apartment has experienced this annoying problem. We are very spoiled to the creature comforts that we have in our homes today that people a hundred years ago would have considered an extreme luxury and hot water on demand is one of them.

When a hot water heater goes out unexpectedly, it can upset the entire household. Bathing, washing dishes, and doing laundry can be put on hold until it is repaired. Sometimes the repair can be as simple as a blown fuse or the tripping of a breaker. If this is the case, you might still want to have your hot water heater examined to see if it caused the power to be cut from it or if the problem is in your fuse box or wiring.

In other instances it might be the hot water heater itself that is the problem. Many times a heating element in the unit can burn out and need replacing. It can be a fairly inexpensive thing to fix, but you really should not attempt it yourself unless you know what you are doing. A leaking hot water heater can also be dangerous. Eventually it might let the water begin flooding out and then you will have a big mess to clean up as well if you did not take the precautionary measures of having the heater in a pan or a drain placed nearby.

If your hot water heater ever shoots out sparks or you smell a burning odor coming from it, you should cut the power to it immediately by removing the fuse or flipping the breaker that applies to it. You will likely need to call in a plumber to check the unit out. If it can not be repaired properly, then you will probably need to replace it. This can usually be done fairly reasonably. Hot water heaters usually cost around two to three hundred dollars depending on the amount of water they hold and the cost of installation.

If you replace an old hot water heater with a new one, keep in mind that setting the temperature that the water is heated to a little lower can help save on your electric or gas bill. If you have not yet heard about the new tank free water heating units, you might look into one of those. They are much smaller and heat water as it is sent through the unit, this means the hot water supply does not run out.
