How To Manage Flood Damage In Your Business

It doesn't matter if flood damage occurs in your business or in your home, it can do a lot to your belongings and merchandise. In the case of the business, this can be quite daunting because, not only do you have to worry about the structure, but you have to worry about the merchandise inside of the building as well. Many businesses have lost thousands and even millions of dollars in merchandise to flood damage, which can sometimes mean the demise of the business if there is no flood insurance or assistance that is adequate enough. But instead of letting this thought get you down, read on to know how you can manage flood damage.

How to manage

If flood damage does occur in your business, stay calm. Think positively and remember that you could do nothing about what happened to your business. Many times, flood is due to natural disaster and it is hard to get everything in order first. Sometimes the natural disaster may be something such as a flash flood, so there is no room for preparation.

When the flood damage has occurred, just try to remove all of the merchandise. Make sure you wear gloves, boots, long sleeves, long pants, a mask to keep from breathing harmful organisms, and goggles to protect your eyes. Remove the merchandise from the flood damaged area and then place the items in three piles. Put the items that were not damaged in one pile, the items that are slightly damaged in another, and the items that are completely damaged in the third pile. Now make sure you mark down how much money in damages the flood damage caused. This is important because you can write off the stuff that has received flood damage on your taxes for that year. Those items are a capital loss, so you can take advantage of that.

Also when managing flood damage, you always want to start with your walls first. Don't work on the carpet and floors before you deal with the walls. You want to work your way from the top down. That way anything that has flood damage above floor level can fall to the floor and be removed with the damaged floor materials.

After repairs

After you have finished your flood damage repairs, you can then work on the merchandise aspect. Figure out what you're going to do with the severely damaged merchandise, the merchandise that isn't completely damaged, and the merchandise that is not damaged. You may be able to place the non-damaged merchandise back on the sales floor. Flood damage, however, does cause mold and that may interfere with your products, depending on what they are. Other products that have received flood damage can be sold as parts.

So as you see, there are ways to overcome flood damage. Just because you encounter flood damage doesn't mean that it is the end of your business. Think of it as rehabilitation. Think of the post flood damage era as a new start.
