Well I am not going to talk about how you can actually get rid of all the water from a flooded basement. I believe that it's always a better idea to do all you can to prevent getting a flooded basement.
There are two main causes for a flooded basement.
Firstly, when water seeps in through walls, floors and windows, it can lead to a flooded basement.
Secondly, when sewer backups happen from the basement drains, it can lead to a flooded basement.
If you want to avoid a flooded basement, it is very important that your drainage system is working efficiently. A poor or improperly working drainage system is one of the main causes for a flooded basement.
Your sump pump and the drainage system in and around the house should be in top order.
Check if your gutters are working effectively. If there is any garbage or debris clogging them, remove it immediately. Blocked or overflowing gutters are one of the main causes leading to a flooded basement.
Run water from a hose and check which direction the water is flowing. The water should not be flowing towards your property. Rather it should be flowing away from the house. If the water is flowing towards the house, you sure are at a great risk at getting a flooded basement.
Do not flush items which can clog your sewer system. Paper towels, feminine products and thick liquids such as grease should never be thrown into the sinks or drains. They will end up clogging your drains and result in a flooded basement.
If there are any low lying areas in your yard, where water can accumulate, fill these spots. Water accumulating in these areas will slowly enter your house and lead to a flooded basement.
Make sure that ground water or rain water is not entering the sewer system. If there are cracks in your home sewer pipes, repair them immediately. If there are cracks in the city sewer pipes, complain about them immediately to the local authorities.
If the foundation drain connections are old and not working properly, get them replaced immediately.
If there is any obstruction near your sewer line and you have experienced any problems in the past because of it, have it permanently removed. If it has led to blockages in the past, it will do so in the future too. You do not want to end up getting a flooded basement again. So remove the obstruction right now.
Making sure that the drainage system is working properly, the sump pumps are in working order, the gutters or foundation drains are not clogged, is the responsibility of the homeowner. And it is the homeowner who will actually reap the benefits of a properly working drainage system. If you want to avoid having a flooded basement, you need to take these steps to ensure that there is no water entering through cracks or through sewer backups.
If you do end up getting a flooded basement, then do not enter it. Let the water recede before entering it.
