The main way that you're going to avoid these risks is by waiting until you are told by fire officials that the structure is safe. That is when you can finally assess fire damage, but there are still risks. Even if you're told the structure is safe, you need to exercise caution. There may still be items smoldering and there may still be things that are hot from the fire. It takes a while for a structure to cool down.
What to do when inspecting fire damage
When you're going into a structure to assess fire damage, you need to take precautions. Wear long sleeves, long pants, a filter mask, steel toe boots, and make sure you take a stick or something of that sort in with you. That way you can test the floor before stepping forward. Fire damage weakens the floor in many places. Although it was deemed safe by fire officials, that doesn't mean that something couldn't happen that results in someone falling through the floor. Places can be missed, so exercise your own caution to make sure you don't become one of the casualties of fire damage.
It also cannot be stressed enough that you need to wear a mask when assessing fire damage because toxic substances can be in the air and you certainly don't want that in your lungs. Also make sure that you don't try to turn on any appliances with fire damage. As a matter of fact, don't touch anything that is electronic because firefighters use water and you could become electrocuted. You could also spark another fire if an electrical current is running through the house. Do not touch these things until you have a professional come and assess the fire damage. That is something that is important to do in order to make your claim to the insurance company.
Fire damage is very severe
Even if one room has fire damage, it is serious business. When the fire department uses those massive fire hoses, water goes everywhere. This means that water can accumulate in places that weren't even burning. This means that you'll have to deal with both water damage and fire damage, which can be quite the headache. Just don't panic and deal with your fire damage one step at a time. However, you have to take care of it quickly, especially when water damage is concerned because of mold growth and such. Just don't overwhelm yourself when dealing with fire damage.
