110 Percent Rule
First, this is where it will cost you more money if you're unfamiliar with the term "110 Percent Rule". This is where movers are required by law to deliver your property or goods for no more than 10 percent above the price of a non-binding estimate. The cost that a moving company estimates on your contract, this is not an actual number that you can rely on paying for your move. Be careful with this one.
Binding Estimate
A binding estimate is an agreement made in advance with your moving company, which guarantees the total cost of the move based upon the quantities and services shown on the estimate. This is the best form of contract that you can have. It will clearly state what you are to pay and for what services are to be performed so that there are no misunderstandings between you and the movers.
Non Binding Estimate
What is a Non Binding Estimate? A non binding estimate is what your mover believes the cost will be, based upon the estimated weight of the shipment and the accessorial services requested. A non-binding estimate is not binding on the mover. The final charges will be based upon the actual weight of your shipment, the services provided, and the tariff provisions in effect. You must be prepared to pay 10 percent more than the estimated charges at delivery (110 Percent Rule).
Accessorial Services
This term applies to services such as packing, appliance servicing, unpacking your belongings, or if you have a piano, it applies to movers having to carry the piano up stair that you request to be performed (or that are necessary because of landlord requirements or other special circumstances). Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charge. Don't assume that movers do these things automatically because they don't and they won't unless you pay them extra for it.
Appliance Service by Third Party
This is the preparation that is to be made for moving major electrical appliances that will make them safe for shipment. Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charge so ask about this before you sign your contract.
Line Haul Charges
This is the charge for the "vehicle transportation portion" of your move. These charges, if separately stated, apply in addition to the accessorial service charges. Bet you didn't know that one. Look for it on your contract.
Inventory
This is an easy one, it applies to the detailed descriptive list of your household goods, which shows the number and condition of each item you ant moved. Don't leave anything off that list; it's your only protection to claim other wise.
Order for Service
This is a document authorizing a mover to transport individual shipper's household goods. This is standard in the moving industry.
Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service
This is an additional level of service featuring guaranteed dates of service. Your mover will provide reimbursement to you for delays. This premium service is often subject to minimum weight requirements. You might want to think about this if you need your furniture as soon as you arrive to your new destination.
Hope these few terms can help you understand your contract a bit better and save you money on your move. Always get yourself several quotes and compare then to see who offers you the best service for the best rate.
