This way if the tank or plumbing has a sudden gushing rupture, all the water will drain away and prevent it from reaching other areas of the home. These newer tanks are not really tanks at all, but more like a filter that heats the cold water as it travels through the unit. They supply endless hot water so you never need to worry about allowing water to heat up after someone else just bathed or ran the dishwasher. Of course, plumbing might still be an issue, but they are said to help reduce your energy bill because they only heat water as it is needed.
