Look at Steven Spielberg for example. He is one of the most famous movie directors in Hollywood. Did it happen by chance or did it happen by design? Did he decide to become a movie director? Did he design his life? Or did it just happen to him?
Well if you have read about Steven Spielberg, you will know that at the age of 12, he was very clear about what he wanted to do. He loves making movies. So with his goal in mind, he started to take action.
He got his family's home movie camera and went around shooting movies. When he was a teenager in college, he would steal into Universal Studios. When all his friends were out vacationing, he would go into the studios to observe and learn from all the directors.
That was how he got started.
Another example is Tiger Woods. He is now the number one golfer in the world. You can say that he was born with the talent. You can say that he started out really young. But the fact remains that he did not become number one just by chance.
At the tender age of 8, he sat down in an interview and told the camera crew that one day he was going to break every single record ever set in golf and become the world number one.
What about ex Us President Bill Clinton? If you read Hillary Clinton's latest autobiography, "Living History", there is a very interesting anecdote inside that I remembered reading. What happened was that just before they got married, after they had graduated from Yale University, Hillary was supposed to meet Clinton or rather Bill, in a cafe park.
She went there and she could not find him there and so she went to the bartender and said, "Excuse me, but, you know, have you seen this guy, my boyfriend Bill?" She began describing Bill Clinton to the bartender and the bartender said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think I saw someone like that in here just now but he left. And when he was in here, he was talking to one of my other customers. And as he was talking, he told the other customers that he will be the US President one day and everyone started laughing."
Hillary looked at the bartender and started laughing and said "Yup, you are right, that is Bill alright." Now what is the point to this story? The point is that Bill Clinton did not become the US President by chance. It was due to a goal which he was very clear about at a very early age.
Now am I saying that whatever goal you set in your life you will definitely achieve? You and I both know that this is not going to happen. But I know for the fact that if you do not even set a target, a specific target, you will never reach it.
Even if you do set a specific target and not reach it, what happens?
It will allow you to go a lot further and do a lot more things that you would not have done had you not set a goal.
So are you ready to sit down and start designing the kind of life you want?
