The airport has just one runway, 2,900 meters long, and an apron large enough to stand 25 aircraft. Of these 25, only 11 are commercial planes. Despite the fact that this airport has been in use since 1972, it has mostly been used for just internal flights, to Madrid and Barcelona. In recent years it has opened its doors to a few of the European low price airlines. It has in the last couple of years service approximately three quarters of a million travelers per year.
Although the current form of the airport has only been in operation since 1972, there has been a much longer tradition of aviation at its Santa Fe location. The first flight recorded here was to celebrate Corpus Cristi, and that was in 1911. 14 years later, the town hall provided the land on which a permanent facility was built; this was called Aerodromo Davila after Luis Davila Ponce de Leon from here the first scheduled flight left to Seville.
Travel to and from the airport is possible by several means. Autocares Gonzalez provide transfers to the city, with one leaving after each international flight. The journey takes around half an hour and costs 3 euros. For the same price there are buses which will take you to the centre of the city too, but with a slightly longer estimated travel time of 45 minutes.
Buses from the city depart from the Palacio de Congresos every hour or so with the first being at 5.30 a.m. and the last at 8.45 p.m. If you would prefer a taxi, there are plenty that you can just pick up at the airport. The cost of a taxi to the centre of the city should be around 17 Euros.
For a shorter stay or transfer, there are some wonderful hotels in the vicinity of Granada airport and very reasonably priced. For example, a state of the art modern hotel just 4 km from the airport will cost your around 70 Euros per night. However, as the airport of Granada is so close to the city, if you have even a few hours to spare it is recommended to take a hotel in the city. There is a good choice of one to four star hotels in the city, with fewer five star to choose from, but the standards of the four stars are good enough, and with prices ranging between 70 and 100 euros per night including breakfast, they are worth the extra few minutes in the taxi to get there.
