The legendary wax figurine museum, Madame Tussauds, originated in London, England. Taught the craft of wax modeling in France by her mother's employer, Marie Tussaud (1761 - 1850) sharpened her skills over the years, surpassing the capabilities of her teacher. Some of her more gruesome projects included making wax models during the French Revolution of the heads of guillotine victims.
In 1834, Marie Tussaud moved from France to England. She created a "chamber of horrors" in the study of her London home, displaying full-size wax models depicting the carnal bloodbath of the French Revolution. Marie Tussaud's grandson found a new home for the collection on Marylebone Road in London after she died in 1850. Madame Tussaud's astonishing wax collection still resides at Marylebone Road, London today.
The enormous popularity of Madame Tussauds has catapulted it to expand from the single London location to a franchise of worldwide wonder. Madame Tussauds, an incredible draw for tourists, boasts six locations worldwide, including three museums in the United States.
