Let’s start off with the basic rules of a sit and go tournament. The first rule you must understand is that there are 9 players at the table, 6 if you decide to play a short handed game. The top 2 players make it to the money in a short handed game and in a 9 seater poker tournament the top 3 players make it to the money. It is a simple concept, outlast 8 other people and you got yourself a win.
There are many factors involved in outlasting those 8 other people. It is best to start out playing extremely tight. Tight is right, especially in the beginning of each sit and go. The more tight of a player you are at the beginning, will give you the best shot of taking down first place at the end. On average, the first 20 poker hands of a sit and go tournament are folded. Your texas holdem poker hands will come to you, you may not see AA, KK, or QQ the entire game, but with patience you can still take down first if you play smart.
After you fold the first 20 hands on average, winning a few of them depending on if your catching cards, there should only be around 5-6 players left at this time. You need to have the mindset by this point to start slowly switching from a tight table image to playing a more solid and aggressive game, taking more chances. Playing scared WILL NOT make you money. Playing SMART WILL! Being able to outsmart your opponents will be the key to your success whether or not you’re catching cards or not, does not matter one bit.
When there is 4 people left, this is where it is now your time to shine. YOU MUST play aggressive and take down as many blinds and pots as you can to pad your chip lead for first place. It does not matter at all if you get 3rd place, I mean you make a little money but take a look at this interesting fact.
A SINGLE FIRST PLACE VICTORY IS JUST LIKE WINNING 3rd PLACE 3 TIMES IN A ROW.
As you can see from that statement, it is absolutely imperative that you gun for first every time. You can not sit on your chip stack with 4 players left and fold great hands because you are scared to get knocked out on the “bubble”. If you play aggressive and steal blinds, you will build your chip stack enough to take down first place. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck. Always remember, play aggressive with 4 players left will be a key to your success at the poker tables.
Good luck at the tables!
