An Overview of Hilton Head

Besides being an excellent location for vacations, Hilton Head has a fascinating history that dates back many years to use by Native Americans, Spanish exploration, and the American Civil War. The origins of what we now call native islanders can be traced back as far as the Civil War when Hilton Head was used to sustain a naval blockade of southern ports. Once the Union took the island, freed slaves from all over the south moved to the island for refuge, and many of the local population to this day are related to those original inhabitants.

The actual Town of Hilton Head Island became an authorized municipality in 1983. Interestingly, the Natural Resources Division has kept a huge amount of control over growth and has the last say as to where new construction may be built, and what level of impact they may impose on the local environment. This goes as far as to dictate what trees may be cut down, landscaping, and water use. Due mostly to this management, visitors will notice an abnormally high number of large trees in developed areas, something that gives the area a very natural feel. Also, several big land-buying deals have been brokered by the Hilton Head government to reduce and control commercial growth.

Just to the north of Hilton Head is Savannah, GA, a city that you'll certainly want to take a day trip to visit if you're into historical buildings. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in America, with its countless squares full of Live Oak trees, Spanish Moss, parks, and statues. The city itself could easily be the subject of an entire week long trip, and we'll cover the places of interest in another article.

Between their excellent plays, Hilton Head Choral Society and Hilton Head Symphony, you won't have difficulty finding refined ways to fill your free time while not on the beach or playing in the ocean.

If golf is your passion, you'll be thrilled to know that Hilton Head is home of the Verizon Heritage, which is a PGA Tour FedEx Cup event played on Harbour Town Golf Links, a course planned by Pete Dye with consultation by Jack Nicklaus. The course is always high on every "best courses" list, and is something you won't want to miss.
