Exploring the passport card means understanding that the passport book can be a difficult, expensive, and time consuming acquisition. There are reliable and honest services allowing for an expedited book, but sometimes, you just need something to help you get into and out of countries such as Canada or Mexico.
These passport cards are small. Only about the size of a regular credit card, these are easy to carry and a great way to make your traveling plans easier. While the book format is going to be good for all kinds of traveling abroad, the cards are only viable for traveling by sea or by land. This does limit the usage of the cards, but for many people, that is all they will need in a lifetime.
With the passport card, you will need the same sort of information and documentation. The verification process is relatively the same. Yes, the government will need proof of who you are, and for many, this is a daunting task whether for a book or a card. With this documentation you, your family, and your country are being kept safe and secure.
The card is then issued and links through a number to a database. This database is secured by the federal government, and while technologies always change, this database is encrypted and has the latest in new technologies.
Now this is where the controversy often arises!
Your passport card is issued with a minute electronic chip. On that chip is a number; the number is linked to that secured database. Now many people claim this is unsafe, but even our driver’s licenses have an imprinted number allowing for police officers and other people to look up information on us relatively easily.
With this new passport card, the number is not visible. Instead, only people with a regulation scanner can receive this information. You will find this is going to make it easier at border patrols because you simply pull out your passport card, and they can actually scan the card from a short distance away.
Again, many people claim this is going to make it easier for people to get a hold of those scanners and scan the card without us knowing while we travel from place to place, or even scan the card while they drive by our homes. However, this is far from a reality.
The card is issued with a mandatory protective sleeve. This sleeve will insure that you are the one with control on when and where it is even capable of being scanned. Yes, you are safe even with an electronic chip holding a number with vital and personal information about you.
Staying secure has never been easier than with this passport card. While there are opponents to this new technology, it is important to realize you are safe as is your family. In fact, you are safer simply because if you lost your wallet or purse, those thieves have no way of finding out your personal identification number.
