How To Talk Sports With Your Boyfriend

I’ve actually been in this situation, and went to the one guy I knew who would be able to give me good, reliable information. I called my dad. Yep, my dad is also a big basketball fan, and I knew that he could help me out with what I needed to know.
I didn’t want to look like a complete airhead the next time my boyfriend and I sat down to watch a game together on TV; I didn’t want to be asking questions every other second. So, I had my dad walk me through the basics of basketball. As an added bonus, my dad also helped me learn the names of the players on my guy’s favorite team, and what positions they played. While I had doubts about whether or not I’d be able to remember them all, I did think he’d be touched that I’d taken the time to try.
If you have a guy friend, brother, uncle, cousin, or other type of man in your life, chances are that at least one of them is going to be able to give you a quick primer in the basics of the sport you need to know.
If he’s really interested in you, and wants you to be a part of his life, your boyfriend will most likely be happy to discuss his favorite sport with you – even if he has to start at the beginning. If your questions are pertinent and not complicated, it will be easy for you to learn about the sport while it’s on TV. (Take my advice, though, and don’t start asking questions when there’s a minute or less on the clock – he won’t hear you and if he does, he’ll just be irritated. Been there, done that.)
Of course, all this is assuming that you have not previously been interested in the type of sports your man enjoys. It is entirely possible, of course, that you yourself have a passion for a particular sport and team. If this is the case, you may already have lots to talk about in this area. You can even engage in some friendly rivalry if you both support teams that play the same sport. Of course, even the most peaceful relationship can experience some intense feelings of dominance and revenge if you happen to support two traditionally opposing teams – say University of Florida and Florida State. But even lovers of these diametrically opposed teams have been known to be in love and even cohabitate!
No matter your sports background (or lack thereof) you can talk to your boyfriend about his favorites. Whether you are in the know and spend time comparing the superiority of one team or player over another or are just learning about the ins and outs of the basketball court, just talk about it, or as Nike says, Just Do It!
