In the last few decades, the hymns have not been as well known as they once were in the history of the church. That is certainly set to change as The Priests will be releasing their debut album in the fall. The Priests, a musical singing group comprised of three priests from Northern Ireland, are bringing focus back to the Latin hymns through their amazing combined talent. The group, which includes two brothers and their long time friend, have been singing together for years. In fact, the group performed in the Vatican choir during their vocational training in Rome. Following their performance in the choir, the group later went on to serve in different parishes but they have never abandoned their love for singing traditional hymns.
Currently, the group is busy recording their first album. Already, there has been speculation regarding which hymns might be present on the album. Several of the Latin hymns are anticipated to be part of the album.
One of the most well known hymns that are certain to be included in the album is Ave Maria. This beautiful and moving hymn is without a doubt the most beloved hymn within the Catholic faith. One of the most amazing features of the hymn is the melody line. It is noted not only for its range, but also for its flexibility. The hymn is comprised of two parts, just as the prayer is comprised. The beginning starts out quite emotionally before settling into a style that is contemplative. During the second section, emotion is returned to the hymn; while the highest tone of the hymn is reached during the fourth syllable.
The range of this hymn is extraordinary, as it can be sung with a single voice or with numerous voices. This beautiful hymn can also cover a broad range of moods. When it is sung slowly, it has often been noted that this one hymn is capable of being so emotionally moving that not a dry eye will remain; even when the words to the song are not used. When it is sung quickly; the mood of the hymn changes to one of liberation and exuberation. It is little wonder that this hymn has remained the most beloved hymn of all time.
While The Priests’ first album will not be released until November, the amount of excitement regarding their rendition of Ave Maria is already growing extraordinarily. When the album finally debuts, it will certainly prove to be a benefit to Catholics around the world that enjoy the traditional Latin hymns.
