“Alex will be much better in the morning,” I said, trying to comfort her. Again,I knew his name without really understanding how.

“Oh, thank you, good sir. God bless you.”

“God blesses all of us,” I replied. Turning to Alex, I continued, “You will sleep well this evening, Alex. The fever will go away tonight. I’ve brought you something.” I felt somewhat awkward as,for some unexplained reason,I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small bottle. It was one of those little pharmacy prescription containers. I didn’t remember bringing it, but I still seemed to know that it was there. I emptied two of the little white pills into the palm of my hand.

I handed them to Alex’s mother, saying, “Give these to him with a glass of water. Here are the rest. Make sure he takes them, two at a time, three times a day, until they’re all gone. He’ll regain his strength very soon.”

She followed my instructions, and finally, Alex was sleeping peacefully. I then turned to Donald and said, “My work here is done. I will stay until the morning, if you don’t mind.”

He led me away from Alex’s house to his own house, overlooking the sea. There was excitement in his voice as he said, “My chieftain, please stay until tomorrow. The rest will do you good. Your quarters are already prepared.”

“I think I’d like that,Donald. Are you sure it’s no trouble?”

“No trouble, I assure you. All the villagers, including myself, will forget about tonight. That’s how it is supposed to work. But little Alex — little Alex will remember, and as he grows older, it will seem as a dream to him.” “Who is Alex, anyway?” I asked. “I thought I knew him or had seen him someplace before.”
