“I promised that I would stay until morning, because of those two chaps, Donald and Charlie. By the way, Donald said he knows you and Gideon.”

“All of us know one another, John. Everything is connected to everything else. Those of us who have the same goals, the same loves, similar hopes and dreams, those of us who are from the same ‘family,’ meet often enough to know one another fairly well.”

“If I were to stay here until morning, what would happen when I return to the restaurant? I mean, would Gideon and Theo be gone? And my children? I didn’t tell them and the baby-sitter that I would be away all night.”

“You still worry about so many details, my friend.” Marla spoke softly and with understanding, “There is no problem with whatever time you choose, because no time will have passed when you return. You’ve done this before with Gideon, but you’ve probably forgotten.”

“I still don’t understand these things too well. Okay. I guess I’ll stay here tonight. Tell me, though, why did I start worrying so much when I was sitting under that tree?” By this time we had reached the edge of the water. We continued walking along the shore for a while before Marla answered.

“Being here is no different from being anywhere else, John. You’re subject to the same thoughts and feelings wherever and whenever you go. True, there are some places that amplify certain situations and others that diminish them. But generally, you’re always in control of your thoughts and your feelings. At first you were fine, handling events in a first-rate manner. Then you went for a walk and finally sat under a tree to reflect on your thoughts and to enjoy the evening.

“Initially, it was nothing but a stray thought that entered your mind. That was easy because you ignored it. Then another thought, and this time you looked at it a bit more carefully, if you see what I mean. Finally you began to consider various possibilities, and as you did that an old acquaintance of yours reared its ugly head. It was that tyrant known as ‘doubt.’ It came into your mind and would have passed through unnoticed had you not asked it to remain and keep you company.
