Long ago, I roamed the hamlets of foreign countries, tasting the joys of various cultures and basking in the broadening experience of international travel. It’s a strange life that I have led. It has taken me across oceans and continents, through jungles and plains and into the presence of princes and fishermen, rich and poor. I have been to many places, have seen and experienced many things, but one place I have never visited is the place where someone else stands — not physically,I mean, but in a more emotional and spiritual sense.

Most of our wars, most of our conflicts, whether on a grand, worldwide scale or in a simpler, more ordinary, everyday manner are primarily due to our tendency to judge others. How easy it has been for me to sit back in self-righteous indignation and cling tenaciously to my point of view to the detriment of all else.

People do things for reasons that are so personal and individual that even they themselves do not understand why. I am reminded of the seeker of truth who took off all his clothes at lunch time and jumped into an icy pond. As soon as he emerged, which was almost instantaneously, an observer asked him why he had done such a stupid thing. His answer, I believe, contained great wisdom, as he declared, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Whatever we have done, we did because it seemed like a good idea at the time. The trick is to learn from past mistakes, to correct our present and future actions, to evolve into a higher order of being and to let compassion, love, joy and understanding flourish. As this occurs, we begin to become more tolerant of all those around us. A new power arises within, and we find that circumstances and events are powerless to harm us. Upon this awareness, a new and brighter day dawns.
