Ever since my first meeting with Gideon, I have tried to live a life exemplifying many of the principles he taught me. There were times when I succeeded brilliantly, times when everything seemed to work so well that I wondered how I could never have known what to do in crisis situations. But there were times, many of them, when, no matter what I did, nothing went right. Then I would fret and fume, thinking all the while that there was no sense nor purpose in human existence. As I persisted in practicing, changes would occur, and again, the matter that seemed so impossible would work itself out in ways that were too perfect to explain. I also became aware that whenever I switched focus from my problems to those of others, whenever I tried to help others instead of being immersed in my own concerns, events took a decided turn for the better.

This day, as I sat on my porch, a gentle breeze arose and a penetrating silence descended. The temperature dropped a few degrees, but I remained there, ever so tranquil, ever so peaceful, watching the interplay of nature. Tomorrow I would be taking a trip to the Big City for routine business purposes. Visiting the Big City was always an exciting experience for me, and it had been a long time since my last trip. I was really looking forward to the experience. It would not be a long trip, only a day — leaving in the morning and returning later in the evening — with a flight time of about two hours.

Sitting there enjoying the breeze, the serenity and thoughts of the Big City, I felt at one with my world. This, indeed, was relaxation. This was the “bliss at eventide.” The tensions and stresses of the day dropped away from me, like magnets that seemed to have lost their power. I drank in the cool evening air and sat there, not concentrating on anything special, but allowing my mind and body to be as one. Within a few minutes I felt so refreshed that I decided to go inside and pack for my trip.
