“I’m not above them,” I protested. “I can hurt as terribly as the next person, soar to heights of ecstasy, descend to depths of despair. I can be as happy or as miserable as anyone.”

“Well,so can I, John,” she replied, “so can I. And as to being with mere mortals, I’m here with you right now. Aren’t you a mere mortal? If this is your line of reasoning, what am I doing here with you?”

For a moment I was taken aback. I never looked on myself as a mere mortal. I always thought that there was more to every living being on earth, more than we realized. “No, Marla,” I objected, “I am not just a mortal. I’m a citizen of the universe, a child of the Infinite. I am as valid as you and Gideon are. I may, at this moment, inhabit a mortal body but my spirit is free to roam the cosmos.”

“Then you’ve answered your own questions, John,” Marla replied with a mischievous, subtle smile. “The stock- broker and the musician were not just ‘mere mortals.’ They were as we are. And yes, I have emotions and, like you, I have problems dealing with them sometimes. We — you, I, Gideon and all others came from the same Source. Sure, we’re unique, but we have much more in common than we have differences. And the differences are actually those of awareness. Your degree of enlightenment is directly proportional to your degree of awareness of who you are. Naturally, an open, curious mind is a prerequisite.”

“But, Marla,” I persisted,“if you were in love with a wandering troubadour, there must have been something about him that was extremely attractive. Was he tall, dark, handsome? And the stockbroker? Was he the head of his firm? Was he rich? You and Gideon never seem to be in want of material things. I mean, c’mon Marla, what attracted you to them?”
