One perk that is often advertised is a free phone with your service plan. While each provider is different, typically you can get a new phone for signing up or at least a good deal on a cutting edge mobile phone. This can be a good deal, however you need to go into it knowing what kind of phone you want and being able to assess the value of the free phone you are being offered.
As you might guess, many providers offer their oldest mobile phone models for free. While this may be perfectly fine for many, you should make sure that the phone has the latest technology that can take advantage of your providers cellular phone system.
Mobile phone service uses two types of networks - Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Global System For Mobile Communication (GSM). The big difference between the two is that the GSM system is a worldwide standard. If you have a GSM compatible phone, then you could in all likelihood use it anywhere in the world.
Although most cellular service runs on a digital signal these days, in the beginning they al ran on an analog signal. The CDMA phones will still work with analog. Some of the older phones are CDMA and if you have had a plan for a long time, you phone could be one. Switching to digital is preferred as analog phones use up batteries much faster and have higher roaming charges.
Of course when choosing a new service plan or a new phone, you will be presented with the latest technology in mobile phones. Picture phones and phones with high tech features can cost you a pretty penny so you will have to decide if the expense is worth it.
Some of the new phones offer not only the ability to take and send pictures but can also act as a video recorder. Some can play MP3's and hook you up with high speed internet access.
But getting mobile phone service should be less about the phone and more about the plan and customer service. Of course, most providers offer comparable phones so you should go with one that you or a friend is happy with. Customer service is key so if you have already worked with a company and are pleased with them then stick with it!
When looking over plans, you should have a good idea of how often you use your phone and where you make calls to. Do you only have the phone for emergency use? Then you don't need to pay more for a fancy plan. On the other hand, if you are one of those that has the mobile phone to their ear all the time, you may need a plan with as much free minutes as you can get! Today, there's a huge variety in plans as well, family plans and prepaid plans offer more choices to suit any lifestyle.
The key to getting a cell phone and plan that suits your lifestyle is to do your research up front and know what you want ahead of time. That way you can walk right into the store and pick the perfect plan for you without becoming overwhelmed by all the offers and options.
