These guidelines will help make your books articulate and compelling to read. This is the difference which could mean total success for you.
Write like you talk
For some reason, some very eloquent speakers end up writing boring, monotonous and artificial sounding books. The basic thing to keep in mind is to write like you talk. Write as if you are narrating to others. Read it out loud to yourself and see if what has been written keeps you engaged. Your writing could be informal depending upon the subject of your book. Use simple flowing language. This will make your book very conversational-like.
Give credit to your readers
Every one likes being praised. To win over readers give them the feeling as if they are as intelligent as you are. Do not spell out everything as simply as you would do for the kids. It is important to have clarity in your writing, but it is not necessary to carry it too far with the 'simple language' act. If you are writing a how-to guide, make it a point to address the readers as 'you' and not in the third person as them.
Words as building blocks
Those words which do not set your story in motion should be dropped. Words should not be used just to build up sentences. Try to make every word meaningful, and thus develop the content gradually. Using bombastic words does not show your proficiency in the language. If the word is meaningless in that place, it is just a fill-in to use up the space.
For example public signs like 'keep off grass' and not "you need to keep off grass" are good examples of short meaningful statements.
Your words should not be the point of distraction. They should smoothly fit into the sentence and quietly flow with the content.
Tempo is everything
Avoid writing long, monotonous statements. Have a mix of short and long sentences. There should be a rhythm to your writing which fascinates the reader.
Start in the middle
One way to make your story interesting is to drop off the reader midway. It makes reading very interesting. The reader is compelled to read further to know what happens next. Once the reader is gripped by the story you can follow your traditional style. This is very effective and appealing and makes reading as well as writing a lot more fun.
Focus on reading and not writing
Keep the reader in mind. Write with a particular reader in mind and not with the words in mind. Focus on natural, free flowing words that keep the reader engrossed.
